Very heavy rainfall in Bintulu, Malaysia
Continuous heavy rain and king tide have caused one of the worst floods in Bintulu’s recent years, severely impacting residential areas here and leaving many families displaced. Homes across the region are inundated, with numerous families facing significant challenges as they grapple with the destruction and disruptions caused by the rising waters. Social media has emerged as a crucial lifeline for residents, enabling them to share real-time updates and call for urgent assistance.
Many distress posts have surfaced online, with affected individuals pleading for rescue from flood-stricken homes. Adding to the crisis, landslides have been reported in several locations, further threatening the safety of residents. Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang has urged residents to remain vigilant amid the unpredictable weather conditions. He noted that the relentless downpour, coupled with exceptionally high tides, has exacerbated the flooding, causing widespread damage across various neighbourhoods.
“Please always be aware of your surroundings, prioritise family safety and follow the authorities’ instructions,” he said, while urging residents to stay updated on the situation and report any immediate assistance needs to the relevant authorities. Emergency response teams continue their efforts on the ground, providing aid to affected communities and managing the situation as it unfolds. As of 8.30am, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) reported that 15 temporary evacuation centers have been opened across Sarawak, accommodating 1,097 individuals from 294 families.
In Bintulu, a temporary evacuation center was established last night at 10pm at Pusat Sukan BDA Kidurong. It currently shelters 109 individuals from 33 families who were evacuated from the Sungai Plan squatters.
